The Tucson Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its 2022-23 season, which will begin with a September 17 concert entitled “Orkesta Mendoza and the Magic of Mexico,” launching Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will feature Tucson’s Orkesta Mendoza performing with the TSO and Music Director José Luis Gomez, accompanied by Nicholas Bardonnay’s photographs of Mexico shown with music by composers from the region. The season will feature violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and the TSO in Fandango, a new concerto by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez; Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras’s MeChicano, co-commissioned by the TSO in conjunction with New Music USA Amplifying Voices program; a “Happy Holidays/¡Feliz Navidad!” holiday program with the Tucson Girls Chorus and the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus; and the U.S. premiere of Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra’s Salseando concerto featuring Venezuelan trumpeter Pacho Flores. Other composers include Grieg, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Juan Bautista Plaza, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Werner Thärichen. The TSO Chorus will perform in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Violinist Francisco Fullana will be the orchestra’s artist in residence. The season closes with Tucson composer Vincent Calianno’s The Facts and Dreams of the World According to Michael Jackson alongside works by Ravel and Schubert.
