“Six months to the day after his death, David Bowie will get a grand tribute from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,” writes Brian McCollum in Tuesday’s (3/22) Detroit Free Press. “The DSO will be joined by a band, vocalists and guest conductor Brent Havens July 10 at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre [Auburn Hills, MI] for ‘The Music of David Bowie,’ a new touring production celebrating the late rock star’s work…. The show will feature rock-symphonic arrangements of about 18 songs made famous by the ever-progressive British musician, who died Jan. 10 after a private battle with liver cancer. ‘These are the same songs with a completely new interpretation,’ said Erik Rönmark, the DSO’s general manager and artistic administrator. ‘His music lends itself to the orchestra so perfectly.’ ” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports on Monday (3/21) that the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will also pay tribute to David Bowie with a concert at Heinz Hall on July 22 that “will feature a full rock band with guest conductor Brent Havens and the PSO presenting such classics as ‘Space Oddity,’ ‘Changes,’ ‘Under Pressure,’ ‘Heroes,’ ‘Rebel Rebel,’ ‘Fame’ and ‘China Girl.’ ” Other orchestras that have previously announced Bowie tributes include the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, Florida Orchestra, and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
