The Virginia Symphony Orchestra has announced a partnership with the Salvation Army’s new Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Norfolk, Virginia, set to open the last weekend of April. Through the partnership, the VSO will participate in family events at the center such as instrument petting zoos, “meet the families of the orchestra” performances, rhythmic play-along activities, and musically themed crafts. Also scheduled are four chamber music concerts at the center between April and December 2014 featuring ensembles from the VSO, including a string quartet, percussion ensemble, “Holiday Brass,” and “VSO Presents Jazz.” “We are thrilled to enter into this important partnership as we find more ways for the Virginia Symphony to serve the community outside of the traditional concert hall experience,” said VSO President and Executive Director Eric Borenstein. The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center will hold programs in fitness, aquatics, and performing arts, and the 92,000-square-foot facility also includes a 400-seat chapel/theater, classrooms, and party rooms. When she died in 2003, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, left more than $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army to construct community centers throughout the U.S.
