Thursday’s (3/25) Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia) reports, “The Virginia Symphony has named a new executive director, Eric Borenstein, who will begin his new duties on June 1. Bornstein currently serves as executive director of the Erie Philharmonic, a position he has held for eight years. … During his tenure in Pennsylvania, the Erie orchestra received the Charles H. Bracken Award for Excellence in Non-profit Governance recognizing the orchestra’s turn-around and stabilization after a near bankruptcy in 2001. Borenstein twice spearheaded negotiations of the musicians’ union contracts and developed partnerships with other arts and non-profit organizations throughout his region. Prior to his tenure at the Erie Philharmonic, he was executive director of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. He also spent six years at the Buffalo Philharmonic in positions in community development, education and marketing. … The executive director position became vacant last August with the resignation of Carla Johnson. In October 2009 Robert Cross … was appointed interim director. Cross will work with Borenstein in the coming weeks to insure a smooth transition.”
