The Westchester Philharmonic in New York announced that it has been awarded $35,000 in general operating support by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for the 2009-10 season. The orchestra doubled its attendance during the past year and had double-digit increases in contributed revenues, despite the challenging economic environment. Lenore Eggleston, Westchester’s director of marketing and development, commented that the grant “validates our strategic plan that centered on the appointment of Itzhak Perlman as our artistic director.” Among the orchestra’s 2009-10 offerings are Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1; Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique; Mozart’s Adagio in E major and Rondo in C major for violin and orchestra, with Perlman on violin; clarinetist Anthony McGill in the Mozart Clarinet concerto; soprano Barbara Cook on a winter pops program; guest conductor Alonda de la Parra leading works of Piazzolla, Villa Lobos, Marquez, and Copland; and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with cellist Zuill Bailey, violinist Giora Schmidt, and pianist Navah Perlman, who is Itzhak Perlman’s daughter.
