“The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has launched its first ever crowdfunding campaign to bring a concerto written by its composer-in-residence to ears around the world,” reads an unsigned item in Monday’s (12/16) Metro (Winnipeg, Canada). “If the campaign can bring in $85,000 the orchestra will record Vincent Ho’s The Shaman, a percussion concerto written especially for virtuoso percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie…. Running 33 minutes long, The Shaman … had its world premiere in Winnipeg in 2011, and has since been performed in front of audiences in Toronto and Taipei. The indiegogo.com campaign is also Glennie’s first foray into crowdfunding.… If all goes according to plan the WSO hopes to record the piece next May in Winnipeg so it can be included on a compilation album of Ho’s work.” A separate article about the increase in crowdfunding for theater in the U.K. appears in Saturday’s (12/14) The Stage (London), and pop singer Amanda Palmer addresses crowdfunding and other topics in a Thursday (12/12) interview in The European (Berlin, Germany).
