On February 24, the Longmont Symphony, led by Music Director Elliot Moore, will present the world premiere of Mountain Myth by composer and musician Michael Udow, a longtime Longmont resident. Udow was the 2014-15 composer in residence with the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, and has composed operas, film scores, orchestral and wind-ensemble works as well as chamber music and solo works. Udow served as principal percussion at Santa Fe Opera for many years, and was a professor at the University of Michigan from 1982 to 2011. He has served short-term composition and percussion residencies at conservatories and universities in China, Japan, Korea, and the U.S. Also on the February 24 program are Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1, with soloist Matthew Zalkind, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The 2017-18 season is Elliot Moore’s first as Longmont Symphony’s music director. He succeeds Robert Olson, who retired after 34 years at the helm. To open its current season, the Longmont Symphony performed a score by another area composer, Carter Pann, a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
