The Green Mountain Youth Symphony in Vermont and the Niagara Symphony Orchestra in Ontario, Canada, each recently announced world premieres during the month of April. On April 5, the Green Mountain Youth Symphony and artistic director Robert Blais performed the world premiere of Beth Anderson’s Revelation at the Barre Opera House on a program entitled “Celebrating Three Centuries of American Women Composers.” Anderson’s Revelation, written 34 years ago, has been performed several times in an edited version known as “Revel,” but the complete work had not been performed until this month. Also on the April 5 program were works by Barbara Harbach, Erin Magill, and Eileen Kocherlakota, as well as the “Gaelic” Symphony in E minor by Mrs. H. H. A. Beach (aka Amy Cheney Beach), premiered in 1896 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. On April 26, the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, conductor Laura Thomas, and the Sultans of String ensemble will give the world premiere of FiddleFire!, a work composed by Chris McKhool and arranged by Rebecca Pellett that aims to introduce young audiences to musical styles including classical, rumba, flamenco, Cuban, East Coast Celtic, and jazz.
