Students and alumni from the Yale School of Music will take part in The Classical Legacy of Benny Goodman at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on September 26. The concert celebrates clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman (1909-1986), and is part of Yale in New York, an annual series of Carnegie Hall concerts showcasing faculty and students from the Yale School of Music. The concert—featuring classical music commissioned and premiered by Goodman—will include performances of Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata (1963); Morton Gould’s Benny’s Gig (1979) and Recovery Music (1984); Bartók’s Contrasts (1938); and Alan Shulman’s Rendezvous (1946). David Shifrin, clarinetist and director of the Yale in New York concert series, will perform in Copland’s Clarinet Concerto (1947), along with members of the Yale Philharmonia. Clarinetists also scheduled to perform include Chad Burrow, Justin O’Dell, Romie de Guise Langlois, Maureen Hurd, and Paul Cho. The concert is the centerpiece of The Benny Goodman Centenary Celebration, a weeklong festival at Yale; Goodman received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale in 1982, and his recording masters and arrangements were bequeathed to the Yale University Music Library in 1986.
