Andrés Lopera, newly announced music director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in Indiana.

Indiana’s “Richmond Symphony Orchestra has named Maestro Andrés Lopera as its new music director,” states an unsigned report on Thursday’s (3/30) Oxford Observer (OH). “Lopera has entered into a three-year contract with RSO. He currently serves as the Associate Conductor of the Columbus Symphony and Music Director of Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra and will commute from Columbus to Richmond. ‘Maestro Lopera brings unbounding energy and passion to his role as the RSO’s fourth Music Director,’ said President of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors Jeff Carter.” The search process began two years ago when Music Director Guy Victor Bordo announced he would retire at the end of the 2021-2022 season. “A search team, led by RSO Board member Jeff Jackson, attracted 53 applicants. By Dec. 2021, the team narrowed the pool to five candidates, each of whom conducted a concert in the 2022-2023 season…. The Richmond Symphony will be the first music director role for Lopera. ‘Working with all the musicians of the orchestra was an amazing experience,’ said Lopera. ‘Meeting the staff and seeing how much they care for the community they serve only added to my excitement.’ ”
